 Training Programs

Environmental Services – Janitorial services and skills are learned in the segment of the training center. Training to improve skills and stay on task are important factors conveyed to consumers taking this course. Money can be earned while learning the skills and upon reaching certain levels, consumers may be selected to work on “off site” work crews where they can apply learned skills.

Horticulture Classes
Consumers choosing this path actually work toward a certificate of completion from South Florida Community College. Training is provided for all skill levels from basic to advanced and any one may participate. An outdoor classroom is utilized as well as the “traditional” classroom for various phases of training.

Computer Classes
Basic skills of computer literacy are taught in the computer lab. Consumers have “hands on” experience while learning the basic concepts and benefits of computer technology.

Arts and Crafts
The arts and crafts room serves a dual purpose as it functions as a “recreation and relaxation” time for consumers as well as a teaching experience. They can learn a vast array of craft work and may display their work throughout the training center or create items to sell.

Cooking Classes
Cooking can be very important to consumers that live, or are planning on an independent living situation. Trained staff teach basic food preparation and cooking skills. Food sanitation and safety are also taught in this class. Fun recipes and activities, not to mention the food make this a sought after course at the training center.

Money, Reading and Writing Skills
Some consumers already possess basic skills in reading, writing and math. In this class, students are engaged in learning experiences and academic training to enhance their abilities in money management and writing/reading skills. Basic teaching from coin recognition to higher level mathematics is taught to enhance and improve the consumer’s lifestyle.

Daily Living Skills
A very important aspect of learning is daily living skills. Classes are conducted to teach personal hygiene, personal appearance, social skills, how to apply for employment, how to keep a job, appropriate behavior in public, sexuality issues, etc. Issues from self esteem to current events are discussed and taught in this class through lecture, discussion, illustration, demonstration and role playing..

Arc Color Guard
The color guard team is comprised of consumers attending the Training Center that come together to practice and perform for fundraisers, festivals and parades. Their various drill, dance and marching routines attract recognition for Arc DeSoto, Inc. and  providing entertainment for thousands.
